Originally written by Dr. Paul O’Neill and published by the MIT Press in 2012, The Culture of Curating and the Curating of Culture(s) investigates how curating has changed art and how art has changed curating, examining the emergence of curatorship over the last thirty years.
Differently from its original book’s design, the Korean version of The Culture of Curating and the Curating of Culture(s) represents the Floorplan’s visual concept and the ideas about curating. The layout of the inside pages makes the book more readable with two columns and footnotes laid out on the same page, as each chapter includes over hundreds of footnotes. It also visualizes a “floorplan” which functions as a map or guide of an exhibition indicating the artworks on display when used in an artistic context.
As probably some readers have already noticed, the book’s cover, which shows an abstract gray coloured image, is an accumulation of all the plates included in the book. It represents histories of contemporary curating are made and accumulated by all those who have challenged to present and frame contemporary art in a better context, not by a few star curators or celebrities. This also shows our aim is to offer a platform for those whose practices are based in contemporary art to stand in solidarity with diverse voices.
