Edited by Paul O’Neill

Originally published by Open Editions in 2007, Curating Subjects includes writings regarding curating and various subjects related to curating. The first Korean version of this book was published by Hyunsil Publishing and Samuso in 2013.
Curating Subjects documents the interdependent relationships between the curatorial past, present and speculative future, which is contributed by curators, critics, art historians, and artists in the diverse formats of writings including essays, interviews, reviews, and critics. Featured authors are leading international practitioners including the contemporary “star curator” Hans Ulrich Obrist, the pioneering curator Jean Leering and Okwui Enwezor, who had contributed to reconstitute western-centered art scene while having served as the artistic director of Gwangju Biennale and documenta 11 in Kassel. It also includes the writings by “artist-curators” such as Liam Gillick and Julie Ault, contemplating the ways of instituting and presenting contemporary art.
Instead of following the convention of curators writing about themselves, the authors cover the curatorial work of others. The result is an objective overview about curating, the curatorial, and the frameworks and institutes of contemporary art, which are pluralistic and dynamic.
In an effort to represent diverse curatorial discourse, which examines the framings of art, in the format of publication, its design also attempts to deviate from the conventional practice. The book uses plain Gothic lettering instead of the Ming-style typeface that is often used in theoretical books in Korea. Moreover, arranging the book’s backbone on the front cover, it shows our gesture with humor questioning the traditional structure of a book, while presented as a diagram of the book’s volume and information.
